ChatGPT has extracted knowledge from the discarded data from September 2021 to present. With plugin support, ChatGPT can now access the Internet and browse websites like a browser, and scrape information in real time. OpenAI is building a version of ChatGPT in the app store, and Microsoft is now bringing these plugins to Windows 11.
The ChatGPT plugin will bring the best of ChatGPT and Bing AI to the desktop operating system via Windows Copilot.
Microsoft will adopt an open plug-in standard developed by OpenAI for ChatGPT to allow cross-functionality across various Microsoft copilot products, such as ChatGPT, Bing, Dynamics 365 Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Windows Copilot. Microsoft also revealed its intention to integrate Bing as ChatGPT’s default search experience.
Additionally, the move will allow developers to design plugins for Microsoft 365 Copilot, including ChatGPT and Bing plugins. Team messaging extensions and Power Platform connectors are also planned for the suite.
Developers can leverage Microsoft Teams Toolkit for Visual Studio code and Visual Studio to facilitate the creation of new plug-ins.
Microsoft unveiled an AI development framework at its Build 2023 developer conference to help developers create their own co-pilots. Windows Smart Co-pilot preview will be available on Windows 11 starting in June.
The framework incorporates support for plug-ins aimed at augmenting AI systems by providing real-time information retrieval, business data integration, and the ability to perform new computations and operations on behalf of users.
In essence, these plugins bridge the gap between AI systems and various data sources, private company information, websites, or backend systems.
This integration aims to create a more efficient and user-friendly experience, connecting copilot with the necessary data sources, enhancing its functionality, and complying with the company’s policies. This development hints at the emergence of a rich plugin ecosystem.
